Encouragement for the Pro-Life Believer

It can be hard when it seems like everyone else has a different opinion than you about something that you feel passionate about, especially when it is such an intense subject as life or death. You may be the only one in a large group or category of people that strongly values something that no one else does.

When abortion comes up in conversation, everyone has different reactions. Some of us may respond immediately, stating our opinion or belief. Others may stay numb or silent out of fear, sadness, anger, or annoyance.

When we get discouraged about the sin of abortion, we need to remember why we believe what we do. Here are some key things to remember: God values life, God loves, God forgives, and God is with us.

God created us, and he loves his creations. He takes pride in what he has created. Abortion is a rebellion against God. It goes against the system he made. Abortion says: “I don’t care that you created this life. I don’t care that this is your plan. I don’t care that you gave it value. I don’t value it; therefore, it has no value.” But throughout Genesis 1, in verses 4, 12, 18, 21, 25, and 31, it says that God declared everything that he created good. That includes us! This is his design. He made people, plants, animals- our whole world. He gave it a system that we should honor.

And as God loves us, we are also commanded to love each other and show compassion.

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people but love your neighbor as yourself.

"I am the LORD." Leviticus 19:18

"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8

"Do everything in love." 1 Cor. 16:14

God forgives those who have sinned. We should also be willing to forgive others of their sins. Sometimes we feel angry at people we know who have had abortions. As hard as this can be, we need to remember that we are commanded to forgive.

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

Ephesians 4:31-32

When we are frustrated, feeling alone, or in despair, we can draw on God for strength. He is with us always.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." Psalm 46:1-3

"My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken." Psalm 62:1-2

Here is something I heard from the former president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board, Tom Elliff. “It’s not easy, but God does make it simple to do what he has called us to do because when we are faced with a hard situation, we don’t have to decide.”

When we are faced with a situation where it is hard to respond to contrary opinions and beliefs to ours, we don’t have to choose what we should do. God has already told us. Honor him, value what he values, love, forgive, lean on him, and so on. Even if it doesn’t go well, even if no one listens to what you have to say, you will still have the confidence that you followed God’s commands. But if you keep silent, you most likely will regret it. You can never really know when you have made an impact on someone. Maybe they will remember you or what you said days or years later. Only God knows.

When faced with hard situations, we can remember what God has told us.
